Mitchell to host world's largest cross country air race Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27, 2008
11TH ANNUAL LAUNCH OF THE AIRVENTURE CUP RACE THE WORLD'S LARGEST CROSS COUNTRY AIR RACE.
Pilots of every background wil come together in Mitchell, South Dakota for the launch of the 11th Annual AirVenture Cup Race, one of the most successful racing events in aviation.  This year the race is breaking new territory as this is the first year the race will be run West to East starting in the Corn Palace City, Mitchell, South Dakota.  The AirVenture Cup Race will attempt to replicate the excitement of the Bendix Trophy Races of the 1930's where dare devil pilot's like Jimmie Doolittel, Bill Lear Jr. and Amerilia Airhart started to go fartther, and faster every day.  Cirrus Disgn, the world's leading innovator of single-engine, piston-powered aircraft will be there with several of their latest demonstrator aircraft.  Activities on Saturady include fly-bys, converstaions with pilots who as a group hold over 500 records for speed, altitude and distance.  On Sunday the public is encouraged to attend the Race Launch.  All activites take place at the Mitchell Airport and Wright Brothers Aviation are open to the public and FREE of charge.
